About our cause
Teach Peace - training primary school children in mediation and positive relationships - provides a unique and much required service to the young people of Portsmouth, teaching children (and their adults) skills that will stand to them for the rest of their lives.
This exciting project aims to reduce conflict, bullying and low scale anti-social behaviour in local primary schools and is part of our BIG vision to help build a Restorative Portsmouth!
Teach Peace has been developed by PMS under the guidance and inspiration of Laura Rook and is facilitated now by Sue Austin and volunteers from Portsmouth Mediation Service. The programme takes a whole school approach and therefore seeks to teach and equip the children, staff and the parents.
The last academic year saw Teach Peace return with great benefit to Fernhurst Junior School and Beacon View Primary Academy to work with groups of children, following the success of previous sessions in Ark Ayrton Primary Academy and Woodcroft Primary School in 2019, training up new teams of mediators to work in the playground.
A team of children (and some parents) in each school attended after-school sessions with Teach Peace to learn how to apply restorative practice and become peer mediators. Teach Peace enables children and parents to learn the skills needed to resolve conflict and bring peace to their playgrounds and communities.
The after-school sessions were made up of team- building activities, learning the 5 restorative questions and doing skills practice. The children then take the role of Peer Mediators in the playground, wearing their mediator caps as they help to resolve conflicts amongst their peers.
Teach Peace is now made available to local schools with a FREE off the shelf training manual, alongside 3 FREE modules of Training for Staff to help them develop a restorative culture within their school
We need your help so we can continue to offer and expand this opportunity to every primary school in Portsmouth!
Thank you for your support and good luck!
Yours sincerely
Mr Stephen Rolls
