About our cause
Charles Dickens Community Orchards are giving FREE FRUIT for local people support us! Our first Orchard is Cornwallis Crescent Community Orchard established in March 2016 and evolving into a charitable organisation. The main community Orchard provides a much needed green oasis space in the centre of the city for people to enjoy with their families for picnics. These Orchards provide a future legacy for our children and grandchildren. Providing free fruit for local people, with meadow areas. A place where people can volunteer to help water the trees in the hot weather and grow fruit bushes and flowers to help the bees come and pollenate the trees. We are working on a vision and masterplan that is expanding further. We want your views on where you would like Orchards to be. so visit our face book page Charles Dickens Community Orchards and let us know what you think. We have a web page now so have more information available about our activities and how you can be involved.
The Charles Dickens Community Orchards and Cornwallis Crescent Community Orchard are works in progress and are the vision of Dennis David and Jon Stokes from the Tree council and other co-founders are Trish Bell and Pauline Powell. We will continue planting more fruit trees around the city now. It would be great to have help with the funding and make Portsmouth amazing through the lottery. From grants and support from the National Tree Council we have alot of different types of fruit bearing trees growing. Our aim is to have a foraging resource for the future generations.
We work together with many organisations Including Portsmouth city council and the Portsmouth & Southsea Tree Wardens and National Tree Council. We have partnered with Urbond a very community spirited organisation. Bringing the local community together. We can do so much more when we work together. All trees including the fruit trees reduce the air polluntion, trees soak up CO2 provide oxygen and help our city breathe. They provide shelter from the sun. Soak up rainwater to prevent flooding through urban run off in the city and make it a nicer place to live.
Our aim for the future are to provide free local fruit for residents. Trees are cared for locally by volunteers.
Free tree pruning training by local experts, providing horticultural knowledge.
This will provide a resource for a local history and literature project linked to Charles Dickens and his love of apples for young people.
We want young people to be involved. Tree champions supported by the national Tree Council. We have be working with the local schools to provide orchards, ( the latest one is in Redwood Park Academy) supported by community groups. Portsmouth University would like to help too. Bringing the community together and looking after these very valuable, lovely community assets. See our facebook page Cornwallis Crescent Community Orchard Volunteers and the Facebook page for Charles Dickens Community Orchards for the latest information.
Our website is www.charlesdickenscommunityorchards.tk
Many of our members have now become Tree Wardens as well. Expanding their knowledge further.
Please help so we can continue to buy fruit trees and improve the free resources we have in the city.
Thank you for your support and good luck!
Yours Sincerely
Dennis David lead volunteer and Trish Bell Co-founders of the Charles Dickens Community Orchards
